MU recognized as Start! Fit-Friendly
company
In April,
MUSC was one of four Tri-county employers recognized by the American
Heart Association (AHA) as a Start! Fit-Friendly Company. In addition
to this recognition, MUSC is the local sponsor of Start!, an initiative
implemented in 2007 by the AHA to encourage Americans to “Walk More,
Eat Well, and Live Longer.”
Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at work—many in
sedentary office environments. This makes the U.S. population
increasingly susceptible to health risks associated with inactive
lifestyles.
The AHA is recognizing employers who champion the health of their
employees and work to create a culture of physical activity in the
workplace. On behalf of the Medical University, MUSC community
outreach manager Mary Beth Mobley, registered dietitian, applied for
and received “Gold-level” recognition by meeting several criteria
including increasing healthy eating options at work, offering employees
physical activity support and promoting a wellness culture.
On April 25, MUSC joined other companies nationwide in Start! Walking
at Work Day. Employees were encouraged to make a pledge to Start!,
walking and becoming active, heart-healthy adults—in the workplace and
at home.
MUSC will also be the first 2007 Start! Lowcountry Heart Walk
sponsor. Save the date of Sept. 29 and show support
by walking and raising awareness of the number one killer of
adults—heart disease.
