Events highlighting Nurses' Week to
begin May 7
by

Each year, May 6 - 12, National Nurses’ Week commemorates the
anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. At MUSC, employees,
staff and physicians simply could not do their jobs in providing
first-rate patient care without the efforts, compassion, and skills of
so many able women and men in nursing. To highlight the contributions
that MUSC nurses make throughout the year, several events are planned
beginning May 7.
The National Nurses’ Week committee at MUSC offers the following events
as opportunities for acknowledgment and appreciation of one of health
care’s most valuable assets, and all are invited to attend.
- The MUSC Nurse of the Year ceremony: On Monday, May 7 all
MUSC and UMA nurses, faculty, friends, and staff are invited to attend
the ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Storm Eye Institute
Auditorium. The MUSC Nurse of the Year will be announced, as well as
all unit winners, followed by a reception. At noon Barbara McLean,
R.N., a clinical nurse specialist, speaker and author with almost 30
years critical care experience, will deliver the event’s keynote
address.
- An educational and organizational fair will take place from
8 a.m. until 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 8 in the Children’s Hospital lobby.
- The Nurses Craft Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wednesday, May 9 in the Children’s Hospital lobby and will display and
sell works of art and skill designed by MUSC nurses.
- Volunteer nurses will participate in a Habitat for Humanity
building project. For more information about participating in this
great opportunity to give back to the community in a different way than
nurses usually do, contact Kris Douglas, R.N., Nurse Alliance
chair-elect, at douglask@musc.edu.
- On Friday May 11, from 9:15 a.m. to noon, nurses are
invited to attend the Nursing Excellence Day Open House on eighth floor
of the Storm Eye Institute Auditorium. The clinical scholar nursing
fellowship will be announced, as well as recognition of new clinical
nurse leaders, new graduates, and newly certified nurses. Drop in at
any time to share in refreshments and learn about best practice at
MUSC.
- On Saturday, May 12, at 7 p.m., “Florence Nightingale” will
deliver birthday cakes to Medical Center units as part of “Florence’s
Traveling Birthday Party.”
