HCC honors cancer survivors through
pictures, stories
The
Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) always honors cancer survivors for their
hope, courage, and perseverance in battling cancer, but especially in
June in light of National Cancer Survivors Month.
To celebrate National Cancer Survivors Month, HCC presents Faces of
Hope, a presentation of pictures and personal stories of cancer
survivors who share their stories of ups and downs and hope and courage
in their struggle against cancer.
Faces of Hope range from a teenaged track runner and aspiring model
diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, to a successful web design
business owner. In between there are the stories of those who are
surviving breast, head and neck, colon and thoracic cancers. Courtenay,
a teenage cancer survivor, recalled, “It just all started with a simple
stomach pain...and it was very scary and depressing for me, because I
was only 16.” Now after surgery and on-going chemotherapy, the young
woman is offering encouragement to others.
Bob, a Citadel graduate, said that despite lasting side effects from
his cancer he is “winning the war against cancer with my family and
friends.”
These are among the many Faces of Hope featured at the Hollings Cancer
Center. Their stories and pictures will be on display at HCC all year.
