Faculty senate meeting minutes for
June
The
faculty senate’s unapproved meeting minutes for June are posted on the

speaker
Roger Poston, Ph.D., director of academic and research computing,
Office of the CIO—Poston provided a quarterly update on activities in
Information Services related to academic and research computing. Topics
included progress of the use of E*Value across the university for both
faculty and course evaluations, electronic grant submission, and
reduction in the number of spam e-mails. The entire report is available
on the faculty senate Web site.
Committee
report
Communication and Education Committee—Geoff Freeman, chair, reported
that a Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for June 27. The topic is,
“Preparedness for Continuity of Research Operations During Hurricane
Season.” Stephen M. Lanier, Ph.D., associate provost for
research, will lead the discussion.
Freeman also announced that the New Faculty Welcome is scheduled for
Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Hollings Cancer Conference
Center. The president, provost, and faculty senate chair will make
brief remarks and the new faculty will be introduced. A reception will
follow.
Updates
Standard of Conduct for Trainees, Students, Residents and
Fellows—Jennifer Horner, Ph.D., reported that the proposed policy is in
the final stages of review with a senate subcommittee and the associate
provost for education and student life. The proposed policy will
incorporate a process for mediation, and it is this process that is in
discussion. The last meeting for the discussion is June. A draft of the
proposed policy will be sent to the senate for review and comment.
New
business
Recognition of Geoffrey A. Freeman—Freeman will be leaving for a year
of active duty in Kuwait beginning July 5. Anne Kilpatrick, DPA,
read the following resolution from the senate: “Whereas Mr. Geoff
Freeman has served the university and faculty senate as a leader and
servant, and whereas his public service requires that he serve in
Kuwait for the next year, the Faculty Senate appreciates his exemplary
leadership and contributions to the university, his colleagues, and the
Faculty Senate, formally acknowledges his service to his community,
state, and nation, and wishes him Godspeed and a safe return to us.”
Recipients of Teaching Excellence Awards—Rick Albenesius, DMD,
president, recognized two senators who received MUSC’s Teaching
Excellence Awards. Nancy Duffy, College of Nursing, received the
Educator/LecturerAward, and David Morrisette, College of Health
Professions, received the Educator/Mentor Award. Duffy and Morrisette
will be recognized at the Faculty Convocation in August.
Faculty Convocation—Albenesius
reminded senators that Faculty Convocation is set for Aug. 21.
The next senate meeting will be held at 7:45 a.m. July 10 in Gazes
Auditorium. The agenda will be posted on the faculty senate’s Web site
prior to the meeting.
