SGA president welcomes new students
to university
by
Michael T. Drake
President,
MUSC Student Government Association
On behalf of the MUSC Student Government Association (SGA), it is my
honor to welcome you to MUSC and introduce you to the exciting
opportunities MUSC has to offer.
As a new student, you may envision yourself spending virtually all of
your time studying and attending lectures, but let me assure you that
there will be plenty of time available to enjoy Charleston and the
activities offered by the SGA. There is life beyond the library and
classroom.
While at MUSC, you will be provided faculty and an administration who
will spend limitless hours enhancing your educational experience. Just
as they are devoted to providing superior academic opportunities to
you, the SGA is devoted to enhancing your student life as well.
The SGA will provide you with the opportunity to meet students from all
disciplines at MUSC, spend evenings out in Charleston, and most
importantly, opportunities for a little rest and relaxation. From
cultural experiences in the St. Luke’s Concert Series, to just plain
fun in the Nights Out, the annual Halloween Party, Oyster Roast,
Winetasting, canoe trips, and our largest event of the year, the
Alhambra celebration, the SGA offers events that will complement even
the toughest of academic schedules. We also provide an extensive
six-sport intramural program, an Interprofessional Competition, and a
Student Academic Series on Diversity.
In addition to the outside activities, the SGA provides both a forum
and a unified voice that interacts intimately with the administration
to address student concerns. The SGA is a 47-member body of elected
representatives from all six colleges and two universitywide student
organizations on campus. I would like to invite and encourage you to
take an active role in your MUSC experience by becoming involved with
the SGA or by expressing your ideas through class representatives on
the SGA, or e-mail sga@musc.edu.
I got involved with the SGA three years ago because I saw many changes
developing at MUSC, from the construction of new hospitals to the
development of new academic programs. I felt that my classmates should
have a strong voice regarding how MUSC will progress into the future.
It is important that each student’s concern is heard at MUSC, and I
hope each of you will play an important role in helping MUSC continue
to strive toward excellence. I ensure you that there is enough time in
your individual schedules to become involved in SGA. If you have any
questions about getting involved or would just like to speak to me
about your new experience here at MUSC, e-mail me. As your SGA
president, I look forward to hearing your suggestions and making your
voices heard at the university level.
