College of Dental Medicine benefactor
honored June 15
The
Bumgardner family of Columbia presented a bust of E. Gaither (E.G.)
Bumgardner, DDS, to the College of Dental Medicine, June 15.
Participating in
the June 15 presentation of the bust of the late Dr. E.G. Bumgardner,
are from left Drs. George K. Bumgardner; Tariq Javed, associate dean,
College of Dental Medicine; John J. (Jack) Sanders, dean, College of
Dental Medicine; John O. Bumgardner Sr.; and Charles G. Bumgardner.
Bumgardner, who practiced dentistry for more than 50 years, helped
establish the college and provided it with its first endowments in
1973. Bumgardner also assisted his three brothers, three sons and two
grandsons in becoming dentists.
Born in Casar, N.C., Bumgardner graduated with a doctorate of dental
surgery from Atlanta Southern Dental School (later part of Emory
University) in 1921 and practiced dentistry in Columbia until his
retirement in 1975. He served as president of the South Carolina Dental
Association from 1940-1941, the first president of the Central District
Dental Society and as an instructor at Columbia Hospital and Providence
Hospital. Bumgardner was awarded Emory University’s Distinguished
Alumni Award in 1979 and was also a life member of MUSC’s Society of
1824 for his giving to the university.
“My sister, Judy, and I commissioned this bust of our father to
honor him and his commitment to our family and to the profession of
dentistry,” said John Bumgardner, DDS, son of E. G. “I cannot think of
a more appropriate place for it to be housed than at the Medical
University’s College of Dental Medicine.”
“This is a very special day for the college,” said John J. Sanders,
DDS, dean of the College of Dental Medicine. “I welcome the Bumgardner
family and am honored to house the bust of one of South Carolina’s
fathers of dentistry in our new Clinical Education Center.”
“We have been honored to have had Dr. E. G. Bumgardner as our
benefactor, and his grandsons, Charles and George, as our students,”
said Tariq Javed, DMD, associate dean of the college. “I remember them
both well during their days at our college and admire them greatly.”
