HCC hosts student, postdoctoral fellow retreat

Hollings Cancer Center, Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy Program (CII), hosted the first graduate student and postdoctoral fellow spring retreat in Hilton Head during the first weekend in March.

Students from nine HCC labs presented talks and more than 14 CII members, consisting of faculty from a multitude of MUSC departments, were present. This event afforded the younger graduate students a venue to showcase their research while also fine tuning presentation skills prior to the beginning of the formal spring meetings. The retreat provided the senior graduate students an opportunity to share their science with a diverse faculty audience, while helping fellow peers hone their presentation skills.

“The retreat was a great success,” said Michael Nishimura, Ph.D., the CII program leader. “I look forward to making this an annual event for CII faculty and their students.”

In an effort to acknowledge the quality of the presentations, the students were evaluated by the session chairs and the following awards were given: Jennifer Mulligan, from the lab of Rita Young, Ph.D., won a $200 prize for the best presentation by a senior student (meaning all postdocs and any graduate student with more than one year in their lab). Amir Alkhami, from the lab of David Cole, M.D.,  won a $200 prize for the best presentation by a junior graduate student (meaning less than one year in their lab). And Juan Varela from the lab of Steve Tomlinson, Ph.D., won a $350 prize for the best overall presentation.

“The success of this retreat would not have been possible without the support of HCC, the commitment of the CII faculty members and the work shown by the graduate student and postdoc presenters,” said Nishimura.
