HELP provides weight loss plan

Stop by the Health 1st Wellness Wednesday table between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 17 in the Children’s Hospital lobby to learn about the Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Plan.

by Tiffany Ricci
Dietetic Intern
Designed to help people engage in a healthier lifestyle, the Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Plan (HELP) is offering a friendly six-week competition of wellness and weight loss.

Presented by MUSC dietetic interns to the staff, students, and friends of the MUSC community, the competition also provides monetary incentives.

In addition to embarking on a healthier lifestyle, participants can compete for prizes through the point-based competition. Participants can earn points in many ways  including attending weekly classes, keeping a food diary, and creating a physical activity log. Points also are awarded for percentage of weight and body fat lost. Previous participants have utilized this program to achieve personal goals such as: increase energy, improve eating habits, decrease blood pressure, and improve portion control.

If these are issues that you’ve tried to tackle in the past, or if you believe a healthier lifestyle is on your horizon, this could help. All participants receive gift bags upon weigh-in and are eligible for door prizes that are raffled off during weekly classes. Overall grand prizes will be awarded to the top three point-earners.

Previous participants describe HELP as: “Very well organized,” “Loaded with great content and information,” and “I was pleased with the results and gained useful knowledge about daily food choices.”

The six-week program begins Jan. 12 with weigh-in, and concludes on Feb. 23 when all participants weigh out, which is the last chance to earn points.

Registration forms will be available in The Catalyst.

Early registrants will pay $20 from Dec. 17 through Jan. 7. After Jan. 7, the registration is $25. Registration booths will be open Dec. 17, Jan. 7, and Jan. 12 during Wellness Wednesday. Gift-wrapped drop boxes for registrations will located at the Medical University Hospital and Ashley River Tower cafeterias.
