SGA president welcomes students to campus

by Sheldon Bates
President, MUSC Student Government Association
On behalf of the MUSC Student Government Association (SGA), it is my honor to welcome you to MUSC. Congratulations on the hard work that has brought you to this point in your education. Your impression of a medical university may include the expectation of a perpetually rigorous academic environment, studying to all hours of the night. While our programs do have demanding curricula, we, the SGA, have been working hard to ensure that each of you has a balanced experience during your time here.

While at MUSC, the faculty and administration will spend limitless hours enhancing your educational experience. Just as they are devoted to providing superior academic opportunities, the SGA is dedicated to enhancing your life outside the classroom. Throughout the year, you may take advantage of opportunities to interact with students from other disciplines, to broaden your cultural background, and to enjoy a little rest and relaxation in the beautiful SC Lowcountry. Whether it is an MUSC happy hour, Spoleto event, or a canoe trip in a marsh, you will find something to suit your interests and maybe even discover new ones. The SGA will also continue to bring you the annual Back-to-School party, Oyster Roast, Oktoberfest, Fall Brawl, Winetasting, and Alhambra, our biggest event of the year. These events will be a welcome respite from the rigors of studying. However you choose to be involved, I encourage you all to pursue excellence and balance throughout your time here at MUSC.

During your MUSC experience, you will witness many exciting changes. It is a unique and thrilling time at MUSC with the opening of the new Ashley River Tower hospital, the completion of a state-of-the-art Simulation Lab in the College of Nursing, the construction of the new dental school, and the upcoming construction of a new drug discovery building, bioengineering facility, and a new home for the College of Pharmacy. These new facilities will provide an environment suitable for our pursuit of academic excellence.

As our infrastructure continues to change and improve, our student body and government do the same. During  the last few years, the SGA has established a strong relationship with our administrators and continues to strengthen those interactions as we represent the voices of students to the administration.   As your SGA president, I will work hard to ensure that your voices are heard at the university level. However, I can only do this with your help. Become involved with the SGA either by serving as a representative for your class or by providing suggestions about how we can better serve the students.

Feel free to e-mail SGA with suggestions or questions at sga@musc.edu, and stay apprised of what the SGA is doing at http://www.musc.edu/sga. SGA representatives look forward to hearing your suggestions and working with all of you this year as we seek to be excellent in our service to you and continue to strengthen and improve our SGA.
