MUSC Excellence at the medical center

June monthly employees, physician honored

People: Fostering employee pride in the workplace

Physician of the Month for June
Susan Harvey, M.D., Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine
Dr. Susan Harvey

Harvey's nomination reads: “This doctor is more than an anesthesiologist in the main operating room (OR). She is a trauma doc, a nursing advocate, a leader, a mentor to most, a friendly, smiling and caring individual. She is the doctor that you want in your OR if you or your family member needs critical care and thinking skills. She takes her personal time to create motivational services for the main OR staff. Reminding us all of what it means to make a difference in the lives of our patients, and why we are all very lucky to work at an institution such as MUSC. She fully believes in and supports the MUSC excellence concept. Our facility is very lucky to have a physician like her, and this is why I feel like she deserves the magnetic physician award.

Employees of the Month for June
Kenny Price, Facilities Management
Kenny Price

Price's nomination reads: “This employee from ART Maintenance is always friendly and ready to help out no matter what the request may be. A few weeks ago a little boy’s balloon came off the string and was stuck on the ceiling. The child was very upset, as it was a get well balloon for his dad who was having a procedure done. I called maintenance and paged this employee. He came right away to check out the situation, got a ladder and got the balloon down for the child. He  offered to tie it back really tight so it wouldn’t come off again. You should have seen the little boy’s face when he gave the balloon to his dad. I know he was in the middle of another job order, but he came with a smile on his face as he always does. He is a pleasure to work with and always willing to tackle any job (and we’ve had quite a few) and go the extra mile. Any job he has ever done for me has been to the satisfaction of the person needing the work done.”

Melissa Brown, Clinical Effectiveness
Melissa Brown
Brown's nomination reads: “This employee works in Clinical Effectiveness as a social worker and went the extra mile for a family resulting in a surprising and amazing outcome. A woman was here and had her baby prematurely. She was staying at the Ronald McDonald house while she was working to help her because she was not from the area. On top of dealing with a premature baby she was dealing with the absence of the baby's father who was in Iraq and had just recently returned, but in Arizona. She knew the mother wanted the baby to be transferred closer to the father and she made it happen. She worked diligently with her contact at TriCare. After telling them the  story and how important it was to the family they went to the TriCare director, who approved the transfer. Her dedication to patients and their families inspires me to find ways of excelling in my own position. This only begins to touch the surface of what she does.”

Elizabeth Cooke, Radiation Oncology
Elizabeth Cooke
Cooke's nomination reads: “A patient needed labs and a urinalysis, but was at the Hope Lodge feeling  miserable after radiation and didn’t feel like coming back to the hospital. This employee works in Radiation Oncology and took the time to go down the street and get the labs so the patient didn’t have to come back to the hospital. That beats anything I’ve seen here.”
