Be aware of dangers with heaters

The weather is changing from the hot and humid days of summer to the cool, sometimes rainy and windy days of fall.

The Fire and Life Safety Division of Occupational, Safety and Health would like to remind the MUSC family of some things to be aware of concerning the use of space heaters:

  • Radiant bar type heaters are not allowed in any MUSC facility.
  • The approved space heater is the oil filled radiator style.
  • All heaters must be UL listed or FM approved.
  • Extension cords can not be used to supply power to the heaters.
  • Heaters must be directly plugged into the wall receptacle.
  • Do not hide cords under rugs.
  • Always check the plug to ensure it snugly fits in the outlet.
  • Do not operate a heater under your desk.
  • Do not place heaters on top of furniture.
  • Heaters require three feet of space from any combustibles.
  • Unplug the heater at the end of the day.
  • Don’t put anything on top of the heater to dry.
  • Do not place the heater where it would create a tripping hazard.
  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

For information, contact 792-3604.
