The
faculty senate serves as the voice of the faculty and works with the
administration to ensure the success of the university’s mission in
teaching, research and service.
The senate comprises 60 senators and 29 alternates who meet once a
month. In order to raise awareness of the senate, periodic updates will
be published highlighting recent activities of the senate and its
sub-committees. Some of the issues that are being addressed by the
senate are:
Governance Committee
This committee is amending the faculty handbook to incorporate approved
changes that currently reside in the Appendix, in readiness for
approval by the board of trustees. The committee will then undertake a
periodic review of the senate constitution and by-laws.
Institutional Advancement Committee
As part of the process to develop a new strategic plan, the university
has established committees in four thematic areas: Technology &
Innovation, Laura Cousineau (Department of Library Science and
Informatics); Entrepre-neurialism, Jacobo Mintzer (College of
Medicine); Globalization, Charlene Pope (College of Nursing); and
Intercollegiate Collaboration, Roger White (College of Pharmacy).
Communication and Education Committee
This committee is developing a new format for its Feb. 8, 2010, faculty
welcome reception. A separate orientation for incoming faculty is being
planned. In addition, this committee is updating the faculty senate Web
site and is devising a mechanism for faculty to communicate with
senators in their division.
Faculty and Institutional Relationships Committee
This committee is currently reviewing the MUSC Standards of Behavior
Agreement to determine if there are conflicts with academic freedom
and examine how such policies will be enforced.
In addition, the senate is actively engaged with the administration in
the process to harmonize contracts in readiness for the 2010-11
academic year.
MUSC faculty senate meetings occur at 7:45 a.m. on the second Tuesday
of each month in Room 125 Gazes and are open to all faculty members.
