Interprofessional Day explores health care roles

Left photo: Two College of Health Professions students create a laundry list of stereotypes connected with their professions. More than 1,100 first and second-year students from all six MUSC colleges and more than 89 faculty explored health care’s professional roles and discussed the concepts of interdisciplinary health care teams  to enhance patient care as part of the third campuswide Interprofessional Day event Jan. 23.   Right photo: Dr. Valerie West, associate provost for educational programs, leads a discussion with first-year students. Joining her is Dr. Glen Mayhew, a guest faculty observer from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Va.

Following the large group session, students divided into interdisciplinary groups of 15 people to attend breakout sessions at locations throughout campus. The sessions were led by a faculty facilitator and featured an icebreaker exercise and discussion about the value of health care roles. Second-year students conducted a teamwork exercise and completed a case-study analysis. Left photo: College of Health Professions’ Dr. Karen Wager emphasizes her point with second-year students as they discuss details regarding their case-study project.
