Ninth Annual Ernest E. Just Symposium to be held Feb. 27

The Ninth Annual Ernest E. Just Symposium will begin at 8 a.m., Friday, Feb. 27 in Room 100 of the Basic Science Building. The symposium celebrates the life and scientific achievements of Ernest E. Just, Ph.D., a prominent black marine biologist and Charleston native.

Undergraduate students and their advisors from throughout the state and region are sponsored to come to MUSC to participate in the symposium. The format includes a morning session with invited speakers who will  introduce the life of Just and discuss career development. For the second year, a student in the College of Graduate Studies will also give a keynote talk describing their research project. This year the student speaker is Shimon Francis, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Francis' talk is titled, “Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Mechanisms of Protection in Amino-glycoside-induced Hair Cell Death.“

In the afternoon, the visiting undergraduate students are accompanied on a campus tour and meet for a breakout session with representatives of their college of interest. Concurrently, internationally known invited speakers will give research talks in the area of cell biology and regenerative medicine.

The full program can be found at http://www.musc.edu/grad/just/index.html.
