‘Women Taking the Lead’

Exhibit: Through March 31 at the Courtenay Gallery. “Women Taking
the Lead” kicks off with a month-long art exhibit featuring local women
professional artists.
Size Is Just a Number by Julie Klaper: Noon, Thursday, March 19 in Room
100 at the Basic Science Building. A presentation and fashion statement
exploring the use of “vanity sizing” by the fashion industry and its
impact on women with implications for health and mental health. The
presentation features members of the Student Health Professionals
United in Recognizing Diversity modeling dresses to
illustrate the issues.
In the Land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor’s Journey in the Saudi
Kingdom by Dr. Qanta Ahmed: Noon, Thursday, March 26 in Room 100
at the Basic Science Building. Qanta Ahmed, M.D., Winthrop University
Hospital will reflect on her experience as a Muslim woman physician in
Saudi Arabia and parallels to her experience in the United States. The
presentation will include readings from her book and book signing
opportunities. Free lunch will be provided for the first 50 students in
attendance.
Artist and scholar Marlene O’Bryant Seabrook: 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday,
March 26, College of Health Professions Atrium. Nationally recognized
educator, lecturer, and fiber artist, Marlene O’Bryant Seabrook, Ph.D.,
will present a gallery of her work, including a quilt specially
commissioned for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. A donation
of $20 is suggested. Proceeds from the event, including a silent
auction, will benefit the Kim Martino Scholarship Fund.
