DAISY Award for Nurses

The MUSC DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Nurses is a monthly award and is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).

All DAISY Award winners received an African Shona Tribe sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” a framed certificate, and a DAISY Award pin. The DAISY Foundation also delivered cinnamon rolls to all the nurses in each winner’s unit.

MUSC is among 400 medical facilities honoring nurses with The DAISY Award. This is one initiative of the foundation whose overall goal is to help fight diseases of the immune system.

August honoree

Connie Barbour, MICU
“Connie opitimizes what the Daisy Award stands for.  She is very compassionate and caring individual with her patients and families.  Connie consistently goes above and beyond during her shifts. Her patients are always crisp, clean, and well taken care of. She is excellent with patient families in all aspects of their needs as well.  She makes them feel comfortable and educates them on their loved ones condition.  She is a leader on our unit and in the RNIII role.  She is consistently our charge nurse and staff knows we will have a good day when she is our leader.  She is a member of AACN and also holds the office of Treasurer.  She attended NTI last year at her own expense and shared the valuable knowledge that she gained with the rest of the unit. Connie is a seasoned nurse who deals well with complicated, extremely ill patients.  She is also very good with relaying information to physicans and has a good relationship with many MD's on the different services we deal with i.e. Neuro, Pulmonary, Trauma etc.  Connie has been a nurse many years and is always eager to pass on her exceptional knowledge and skill when needed to make MICU a wonderful place to work.”
