DAISY Award for Nurses
|
The MUSC DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Nurses is a monthly award and is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the
super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes
who died of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).
All DAISY Award winners received an African Shona Tribe
sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” a framed certificate, and a DAISY Award
pin. The DAISY Foundation also delivered cinnamon rolls to all the nurses in
each winner’s unit.
MUSC is among 400 medical facilities honoring
nurses with The DAISY Award. This is one initiative of the foundation whose
overall goal is to help fight diseases of the immune system.
July honoree
Sabrina Magistrado, 5E Nursery
“Sabrina
is the kind of nurse that you can only dream of. She does great things
for her patients, and is always an advocate, even if it means
disagreeing with the attendings for the patient's best interest.
She goes above and beyond with her teaching to make sure parents not
only get the information they need, but also understand it. She goes
the extra mile to help families through a tough time. For example, the
other day I was walking out of the elevator with her ready to go home,
and she passed familier faces. Just after telling me that she was
drained and ready to go to bed the minute she hits the pillow, she
stops to ask them if everything is OK. She told me to go on, that she
would stay to help this family. The next day she said she stayed three
hours after work to help a family that used to be on her floor get
situated because they were readmitted to another floor. She felt that
they needed the support, and could tell their anxiety level was high.
The family came down to thank her again a week later, telling her they
don't know what they would have done without her that day. She
apparently answered questions for them that they didn't even know to
ask, and just stayed at the bedside until she knew they had everything
under control. She took the time to explain and educate them on their
current sitauation. She broke down the information in a way that they
could understand. That to me is an exemplary nurse. She doesn't just
come to work to do her job, she believes in her job. She is a
role model for many nurses not just on her floor, but for all.”
