Ethical
issues in research focus of annual Thomas A. Pitts Lectureship The
theme for the Annual Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship will be “From
Laboratory to Bedside: Ethical Issues in Clinical and Translational
Research.”
Nationally well-known speakers will address ethical issues of interest
to physicians, nurses and other MUSC health professionals.
It will be held Oct. 29 -30 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 and 9
a.m. to noon on Oct. 30 at the College of Health Professions (CHP), and
there is free registration for MUSC faculty, staff and students.
Robert Sade, M.D., professor of surgery and director of MUSC’s
Institute of Human Values in Health Care, said the popularity of this
annual conference has continued to grow since it began in 1994.
The Gazes Auditorium became too small to accommodate the 150 to 200
registrants, so in 2007 the lectureship moved to local hotels. The
availability of adequate facilities in the newly constructed CHP
building allowed it to be moved back to campus in 2009. Sade said it
now is held in Room 205, Complex A of the CHP building.
This year, the lectureship concentrates on issues in research ethics,
and is supported in part by the South Carolina Clinical and
Translational Research Institute (SCTR). Eight speakers at this
conference are among the top experts in North America on the ethics of
clinical research.
“The format of the lectureship and the four point-counterpoint
sessions make for a particularly lively and informative conference,”
Sade said.
The conference is supported in part by a bequest from Thomas Antley
Pitts II, M.D., 1893-1991, who served as a member of the MUSC board of
trustees for 36 years and was its chair for 25 years. Half of his
bequest was to be used for teaching medical ethics. Every year, a group
of nationally and internationally-known experts in a particular field
of ethics and bioethics are brought to Charleston for the conference,
which focuses on a specific theme.
“This is one of the outstanding intellectual events at MUSC each year,”
Sade said.
