MUSC faculty senate
|
The faculty senate
serves as the voice of the faculty and works with
the administration to ensure the success of the university’s mission in
teaching, research and service. For
more information, see the faculty senate Web site at http://www.musc.edu/facsen.
Governance
Chair Paul Jacques, College of Health Professions
Faculty senate elections were held in September. New senators will be
welcomed at the October meeting of the full senate. Election of new
senate officers (president, vice president and secretary) and selection
of committee assignments will also be held.
For a description of a faculty senate officer and committee
responsibilities, see the left side column of the faculty senate home
page: http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/faculty_senate//.
Communication and Education
Chair Geoff Freeman, Department of Library Sciences and Informatics
This year, the New Faculty Welcome was held in conjunction
with MUSC Faculty Convocation on Aug. 24. The participation of several
senators made this year’s event a well-attended, resounding success.
Institutional Advancement
Chair Carol McDougall, College of Nursing
This year, the committee begins development of a faculty
senate strategic plan.
Post-tenure Review
Chair Michael Wargovich, College of Medicine, Basic Science
This ad hoc committee of the faculty senate was formed
following a settlement of the new faculty contracts whereby the
university administration and representatives of faculty senate agreed
to reexamine post-tenure review processes.
A committee of faculty representatives from each college
has met and is working with administration to address concerns.
A report from the post-tenure review committee will be
delivered to the board of trustees in December.
New Business
Stuart Knight, from MUSC’s Office of Industry Partnerships (OIP),
presented a program describing the newly created office’s mission and
goals.
The purpose of OIP is to facilitate MUSC’s proactive engagement with
industry and act as a centralized portal through which areas of
scientific excellence could be identified and mutually beneficial
contractual relationships developed. A question and answer session
followed Knight’s presentation.
Based on his presentation and questions that followed, the faculty
senate is compiling a list of questions to be forwarded to
Knight.
MUSC faculty senate meetings occur on the second Tuesday of each month
at 7:45 a.m. in Room 125 Gazes Cardiac Research Institute and are open
to all faculty members.
