MUSC board of trustees keeps university running


MUSC board of trustees keeps university running The board of trustees is the final authority and governing body of MUSC, its colleges, the outreach programs and ancillary functions. It establishes general policies of the university, defines educational programs and approves annual budgets. The board names principal officers of the university, including the president. Meeting six times a year, the group includes physicians, dentists, an engineer, a former congressman, a former business executive, a certified public accountant and an attorney.

Stanley Cyril Baker Jr., M.D.
A resident of Greenwood, Baker has served on the board since 1977 representing the medical profession from the 3rd Congressional District. He has served as vice chair and chair. A retired general and thoracic surgeon, he graduated from The Citadel and received his medical degree from MUSC in 1952. Baker was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by the State of South Carolina, and named a Distinguished Alumnus of MUSC in 1990. He is a clinical professor at MUSC-AHEC at the Greenwood residency program. He is a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and has four children and eight grandchildren.


Melvyn Berlinsky
A native of Charleston, Berlinsky is a lay representative from Congressional District 1 and has been on the board of trustees since 1971. He was vice chair from 1990 to 1994 and has served as chair of the Education, Faculty, and Student Affairs Committee. He serves as the representative of the board of trustees to the Hollings Cancer Center and attended The Citadel. He and  his wife, Joan, have three sons.



William H. Bingham Sr.
Bingham is a licensed professional engineer and is president and owner of Hercules Contractors and Engineers Inc. of Cayce. A lay representative from Congressional District 2, he began his term in 2002.  Bingham is a graduate of the University of South Carolina (USC). He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and was on the State Private Industry Council of S.C. and was named Contractor of the Year Award in 2000. Bingham and his wife, Mary Lynn, have three children.



Cotesworth Pinckney Fishburne Jr., DDS
A Walterboro native, Fishburne has served as a member since 1988. He is a 1959 Wofford College graduate and attended the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated with a degree in dentistry in 1963. After serving in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, Fishburne opened a dentistry practice in Rock Hill in 1965, treating patients until 2002. He and his wife, Shirley, have two daughters. 




William B. Hewitt
A Charleston native, Hewitt began his term on the board June 2003 as the governor’s at-large appointee. Hewitt is chair of the board of Polymer Group Inc. He was president and chief executive officer of the Union Corporation, now Outsourcing Solutions Inc. Hewitt received engineering degrees from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut.



Donald R. Johnson II, M.D.
Johnson, who is a Summerville native, is the medical profession’s representative from Congressional District 1. He was elected to the board in 1994 and served as board chairman from 2002 to 2006. Johnson attended the College of Charleston and graduated from MUSC in 1984. He is the medical director of the Southeastern Spine Institute which he founded in 1990 and serves on the clinical faculty as an associate clinical professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He and his wife, Kim, have three children.


Edward Conyers O’Bryan Jr., M.D.
A Florence native, O’Bryan has served on the board of trustees since 1976 as the medical profession’s representative from Congressional District 6. He served as chair of the board from 1994 to 1998 and was re-elected as chair in 2000. After completing his undergraduate studies at USC, O’Bryan received his medical degree from MUSC in 1960.  He was a medical officer in the U.S. Marine Corps before returning to MUSC for residency. O’Bryan has a private practice in cardiology in Florence, and holds a full clinical professorship at MUSC. In 1994, O’Bryan was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. He was previously recognized as a distinguished alumnus of MUSC and S.C. Physician of the Year.  He and his wife, Jennie, have one child.

Paula E. Orr, M.D.
Orr began her term with the board in July 2003 as the governor’s designee. She is a physician and owner of the Charleston Women’s Wellness Center in Charleston. Orr serves on the board of the Carolina Youth Development Center, and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as well as Jack and Jill of America, Inc. A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., Orr received her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. She completed her residency training and served as chief resident in the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She and her husband, Jon, have four children.

Thomas C. Rowland Jr., M.D.
A former vice-chair and chair, Rowland has been a board member since 1982, representing the medical profession from Congressional District 2.  A USC alumnus, Rowland earned his medical degree from MUSC in 1959. Rowland spent nine years in the U.S. Navy, before completing his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology. Rowland entered private practice in Columbia in 1968. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto in 1987 twice, and was named Distinguished Alumnus of MUSC in 1994. A former president of the South Carolina Medical Association, Rowland holds professorships at the USC School of Medicine and MUSC. He also served as president of the Southern Medical Association, Southern GYN Society, and South Atlantic Association of OB/GYN. For three years, he served as treasurer of the American College of Ob-Gyn. He and his wife, Isabelle, have two children and six grandchildren.

Charles W. Schulze
Originally from Greenwood, Schulze began his first term as a trustee in 2002 as a lay representative from the 3rd Congressional District. He received his degrees in accounting from Georgia Military Academy and USC. Schulze served four years in the U.S. Air Force and is a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Schulze is a shareholder in the regional accounting and consulting firm of Elliott Davis, LLC. He is the former president of the S.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and former member and chairman of the S.C. Board of Accountancy. Active throughout his career with many non-profit boards, Schulze received the S.C. Association of CPAs and American Institute of CPAs public service awards. He and his wife, Sarah, have two children.

Thomas L. Stephenson, J.D.
Stephenson has served on the board since 1998 and was elected chairman in 2010. The lay representative from Congressional District 4, Stephenson received both his undergraduate and law degrees from USC. Stephenson has practiced law since 1979. He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America and as one of the Top 25 Attorneys in South Carolina as published in South Carolina Super Lawyers. He and his wife, Dianne, live in Greenville and have two children.



Charles Brannon Thomas Jr., M.D.
Elected as the medical profession’s representative from Congressional District 4 in 1996, Thomas was chairman from 2006 to 2010. A 1973 USC alumnus, Thomas went on to obtain his bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from MUSC in 1978 and medical degree from MUSC in 1984. Thomas, who is an orthopaedic surgeon, has a practice in Greenville. Thomas is a commissioner on the S.C. Commission on Higher Education.




James E. Wiseman Jr., DMD
Elected as the lay representative from Congressional District 5 in 2002, Wiseman is a retired dentist and member of the S.C. Dental Association. He is a USC alumnus and obtained his doctor of dental medicine degree from the University of Louisville in 1959. Wiseman is past president of the Central District Dental Society and past president of the S.C. Academy of Practice Administration. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Governor’s Rural Summit Award, Woodrow Wilson Award, Order of the Palmetto, S.C. Dental Association Citizenship Award, and the S.C. Downtown Development Award. Wiseman was named a USC Distinguished Alumnus in 2006.

Robin M. Tallon
Tallon, a former U.S. congressman, began his first term as a trustee in 2006 as lay representative from the 6th Congressional District. A Florence native, Tallon attended USC and graduated from American University in Washington, D.C.  Congressman Tallon served in the S.C. House of Representatives prior to being elected in 1981 to serve the 6th Congressional District in the U.S. Congress. He served in Congress for five terms. In 1992, Tallon founded the lobbying and investment firm of Robin Tallon & Associates, and now serves as president. Tallon was named the 1983 S.C. Small Businessman of the Year. More recently, Tallon has worked on regulatory issues with various federal agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation.
