Adults more than 25 pounds overweight seek out program

Registration is being held for Healthy Charleston Challenge: MUSC’s Biggest Loser style program where participants already have lost more than 10,000 pounds.

This program is for adults who are more than 25 pounds overweight and need to make lifestyle changes to prevent or manage chronic disease. Participants will be placed on a team with a fitness trainer who will guide them during the 10-week competition. Nutrition education is presented weekly along with tips from the team psychologist.

The program includes a 12-week membership to the center and pre- and post-fitness testing. Janis Newton, wellness center program director, said participants have positively changed blood lipid profiles, while lowering blood pressure, cholesterol levels, body mass indexes and percentage of body fat.

“It is very rewarding watching so many people change the way they live their lives. I have never seen so many people love getting healthy and then sticking to their new habits long after the program competition is over.”

Interested participants for the January 2011 teams must send in an application by Dec. 1. The costs for non-members is $300 ($150 with application); members, $150 ($75 with application) and students $125 ($50 with application).
