The 2011 Avanti Award in Lipids, which recognizes outstanding research
contributions in the area of lipid research, was awarded to Yusuf A.
Hannun, M.D., Distinguished University Professor, Ralph F. Hirschmann
Professor and Chairman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as
announced by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology.
The award is one of 10 awards recognizing research excellence that were
presented at the 2010 Experimental Biology meeting in Anaheim, Calif.
Hannun, who is an internationally-known researcher for his expertise in
sphingolipids, protein kinases and signal transduction, was recognized
for his bioactive sphingolipids work and its potential for significant
medical impacts.
Hannun will present his award lecture, “Network of Bioactive
Sphingolipids,” as part of the Avanti Award in Lipids on April 11 at
the 2011 ASBMB annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif.
Hannun received his medical degree from American University of Beirut,
Lebanon, in 1981 and later completed an internship and internal
medicine residency at the same institution. In 1986, he completed a
hematology/oncology fellowship and did post graduate work in chemistry
at Duke University Medical Center where he also held several faculty
positions.
Hannun is co-principal investigator of a multi-year $10.9-million
Center for Biomedical Research Excellence in Lipidomics and
Pathobiology grant studying the relationship between fatty molecules
and human disease. He also is the principal investigator of a Program
Project grant from the National Cancer Institute.
