150 years ago history was made at St. Luke’s Chapel

A study of the United States arsenal and the surviving buildings will be held at 6 p.m., Nov. 10 at St. Luke’s Chapel. The program will explore why the federal government wanted to build an arsenal and barracks on the city block between Ashley Avenue and President Street in 1825.

The history of this site will be studied, using photos and other video aids, as well as where the struggle started for states rights and independence.

The program will be presented by Tom Ilderton, a Charleston historian on the board of the Fort Sumter—Fort Moultrie Historical Trust, MUSC Chapel Committee and the Porter Military Academy Alumni Association.
