Workshop to guide students

As part of the “Getting Financially Well” series for students, MUSC in conjunction with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), will present a debt management workshop for students at noon, Nov. 16 in Room 100 of the Basic Science Building (BSB).

This workshop will focus on budgeting and creating a spending plan, managing credit and credit cards. Nicole Knight, a senior education debt management specialist and trainer in the AAMC’s Office of Student Financial Services, will be the speaker.

Additionally, Elizabeth Martin, an assistant vice president at Wachovia Bank, will present a workshop on credit and managing your credit from 12 to 1 p.m., Nov. 18, in Room 402, BSB.

Box lunches will be provided to the first 25 students to arrive at either of the events.

Second-year medical student Christina Baraty contacted AAMC to inquire about the organization’s debt management workshop. She shared information with MUSC’s financial aid office, who contacted AAMC to bring it to Charleston.

MUSC’s Education and Student Life leadership collaborated with the financial aid office to develop an expanded financial literacy program for students.

MUSC and AAMC will present another debt management workshop on April 6, 2011, focusing on loan repayment options loan forgiveness. The Education and Student Life Administration also is planning additional workshops in 2011.

Education and Student Life also is developing a financial literacy Web site as part of the “Getting Financially Well” program.
