‘Making a difference every day’

Employees of the Month
Sherman Olsen, Psychiatry
Sherman Olsen

Mr. Olsen greets all the patients and their families each morning as they arrive, and he always does this in a positive and friendly manner. On Nov. 19, a family member arrived with a patient but was unable to escort the patient into the building because of the separation anxiety that the patient was experiencing. The extended family member became angry. Mr. Olsen assessed the situation and immediately went and had staff go outside to engage the family member in a non-violent solution to the problem.”
Nominated by Meredith Lyons-Crew

Karen Moskos, Department of Family Medicine
Karen Moskos

“On Nov. 19, Karen noted from a news release that a family of one of our patients had suffered a traumatic house fire. The family of five, with the house a total loss, had been staying in a local hotel. Karen, on her own initiative, contacted the family and found out that they were running out of money and would be forced out on the street that weekend. Karen, working with Red Cross to assist this family, proceeded to collect more than $300 from Family Medicine staff and faculty.”

Iggy Pla, Facilities Management
Iggy Pla

“I was walking into the Ashley River Tower Garage Oct. 21 with Iggy when a lady pulled up to the parking gate and forgot to place her car in park. While she was half in, half out, the car took off, crashing through the gate. Iggy jumped and ran after the car, getting around tothe driver's side and jumped in and placed his one hand on the brake, and reached around the woman to put the car into park. It was amazing to witness as the car could have gone in any direction, could have pinned Iggy and the woman in between the door and car if it had hit the column nearby or run over either had they fallen. He did not hesitate to think of his safety in his actions, only to help out someone in need.”
Nominated by Darcie Lyon

Terri Massey, Safety & Security/Volunteer & Guest Services
Terri Massey

“Terri assisted a family member who asked her if the hospital had a laundromat. Terri told her that the hospital didn't have a laundromat and noticed a bag of clothes on the floor. Terri asked the family member is she was allergic to any detergents. Terri then took the bag of laundry home and brought the clothes back that night, clean and folded.”
Nominated by Tom Martin
