Faculty presents at annual conference in Atlanta

Janice Key, M.D., professor of Pediatrics and director of Adolescent Medicine, and Coleen Martin, registered dietitian and program coordinator for MUSC Lean Team, presented at the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality in March in Atlanta. This was the 10th annual forum for Improving Children’s Healthcare and Childhood Obesity Congress. Key and Martin conducted a workshop titled, “The Lean Team: Enhancing School-Based Obesity Prevention Programs by Including Services for Teachers.”

Workshop participants learned how the inclusion of school faculty and staff in a school-based health initiative can lead to improved behaviors modeled by teachers. This can lead to increased participation by students. This model was found to be particularly effective in schools with predominantly minority or low-income students who had little parental involvement.
