Lowcountry partnership for Biomedical Innovation receives grant

The National Science Foundation’s Partnerships for Innovation Program has awarded a two-year $599,969 grant to the College of Charleston for the Lowcountry Partnership for Biomedical Innovation.

This effort is led by the College of Charleston (Dr. Kelly Shaver), with other academic partners being the Medical University of South Carolina (Mark Kindy, Ph.D.) and, the University of Louisville.  Public sector partners include the South Carolina Research Authority, the City of Charleston and the Charleston Regional Development Alliance; Private sector partners include the Charleston Angel Partners and the Intertech Group.

“This grant lets us put together a tremendous business team,” said Kindy. “Together we can take technology from the bench to the bedside. MUSC is providing the technologies, investigators and the startup companies that the College of Charleston business school will work with to help develop. We know how the technology works, how to do the research, but we don’t know how to market this to investors and take this to the next level.”

The project is intended to use psychological and social research on entrepreneurial individuals and start-up teams to increase the likelihood that biomedical discoveries will be commercialized.
