MUSC recycles 3.5 pounds of cardboard per person and ranks 10th in the nation among the 231 colleges and universities that reported their volumes during the 10-week RecycleMania competition.
With more than 600 colleges and universities signed up this year, RecycleMania participants all over the country recycled or composted more than 84 million pounds of material during the course of ten weeks. MUSC also placed third in the paper recycling category—above UNC-Chapel Hill, Emory, Duke, Clemson and USC. For details on the competition and results go to http://recyclemaniacs.org/results.aspx.
This competition is just one of the ways the Sustainability Program is attempting to reduce MUSC’s carbon footprint. Since its creation, the sustainability effort has worked on many ways to reduce waste, reuse items such as office supplies and recycle as much as possible. One of the projects MUSC was involved in is extending its paper shredding routes to off-campus clinics and offices.
The department also continues efforts to reduce MUSC’s environmental impact and promote recycling and energy efficiency.
