Free financial seminars offer expert advice

National statistics show that about 70 percent  of Americans have no will. Of those who do have a will, about 70 percent are outdated wills. MUSC’s Office of Planned Giving hopes to change some of those numbers with a series of noon lectures on a variety of topics from finances to wills.

Toni Jernigan, director of planned giving, said that without a will, the state will “make” one for someone who has died. “Now may be a great time to sign a new or updated will. The MUSC Office of Planned Giving is here to help. Most people don’t realize that if you die without a Living Will and Testament, the State will determine what your wishes are at the expense of your loved ones. We want to encourage people to take a moment to consider their legacies.”

Jernigan said there are many reasons people may not have a will.

“What is it about the preparation of one’s personal wishes—the purpose of the Last Will and Testament— that Americans avoid in such resounding numbers? Some may think it is too costly or they have distaste for legal documents. Others may think they have too little property to merit a will or sometimes life just gets in the way.”

The seminars, which run from May 24 through June 4, will answer questions about wills, finances and other estate planning issues. Jernigan said some of the seminars will focus on how to set up trusts.

“Giving time, talent and treasures to help others is a long held tradition for MUSC faculty and staff.  With careful financial planning, you can achieve your retirement goals and make charitable contributions to organizations of your choosing. Whether for global disasters, national causes or needs right here at MUSC, the planned giving office is a resource for you.”

The seminars will be presented by local attorneys and financial planners who are extremely knowledgeable, said Jernigan. All seminars, which are open to the public, are a brown bag event. Each one will begin just after noon and end by 12:50 p.m. Every presenter will offer a discounted service for those who attend the seminars.
