Road closures, garage detour begins May 24

The first phase of construction that will be noticeable to the public for the Bee Street and Courtenay Drive Improvement Project will begin May 24, and take approximately four months to complete.

the project online at http://www.ccroadwise.org.

Closures to Bee Street
Bee Street will be closed in both directions between Courtenay Drive and Bravo Street.

Main entrance closed to MUSC parking garage
  • The work on Bee Street will require the closure of the main entrance of the MUSC parking garage located at the corner of Bee Street and Courtenay Drive.
  • Access to the garage will be available through the rear entrance across from Bravo Street as indicated by detour signs.
  • The detour will route motorists from Courtenay Drive along Ralph H. Johnson Drive to Bravo Street. Motorists will then cross Bee Street and go in the rear entrance of the garage.
Lane closures on Courtenay Drive
  • Road work may also occur along Courtenay Drive from Cannon Street to Ralph H. Johnson Drive.
  • Any temporary lane closures will occur between 8 p.m. and 9 a.m., on different weekday and weekend schedules.
  •   At no time will Courtenay Drive be blocked in either direction.
  • All motorists traveling through the project area are asked to be aware of equipment and crews and to be prepared for delays beginning on May 24. Alternate routes are recommended.    The public is asked to take notice of traffic control signs and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

Background information on the project
The project was requested by the City of Charleston and approved by voters in the second Transportation Sales Tax bond referendum. It is expected to be completed in less than a year. The improvements will help traffic flow around medical centers during peak hours and provide drainage relief along the Bee Street area.
