CON receives RWJF scholarship grant

The College of Nursing (CON) received its second grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that will allow MUSC to allocate $100,000 among 10 second-degree, accelerated baccalaureate students during the academic year 2010-2011.

The grant comes through the foundation’s New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN).

In 2008, CON was one of the first institutions in the nation to receive this grant to be used for scholarships to increase the number of students enrolled in MUSC’s accelerated bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program. NCIN was launched as a national initiative by the foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and aims to help alleviate the nation’s nursing shortage by increasing the number of students in accelerated nursing programs.

“The scholarships provided through this program are significant for our students and clearly reflect on the commitment of RWJF to a diverse and well educated nursing workforce. We are extremely pleased to receive a second round of support from them,” said CON Dean Gail Stuart, Ph.D., R.N.

Through NCIN, scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be distributed to entry-level, second-degree nursing students enrolled in the college’s accelerated BSN program. Award preference is given to students from groups underrepresented in nursing. This grant for scholarships will assist CON to leverage faculty resources and provide leadership development to ensure successful program completion by recipients.

AACN serves as the National Program Office for the foundation’s initiative and oversees the grant application submission and review processes. Visit http://www.newcareersinnursing.org.
