Public Safety crime prevention tips, update

On May 22 three vehicles were illegally entered in one of MUSC's garages and items were taken or destroyed.

On May 31 five vehicles were illegally entered, again in one of MUSC's garages, and valuables and cash were taken.

All of these thefts have had a common denominator in that none of the vehicles was locked. The thieves just opened a door and made off with the victim’s property. The Department of Public Safety arrested two suspects for the May 31 thefts and recovered most of the stolen property and cash on the spot.

An arrest warrant was obtained for the suspect in the May 22 thefts.

Tips
  • Lock your car. It doesn’t matter how long you are going to be away from it. In one case on May 31 the victim was away from the vehicle for less than 15 minutes.
  • Secure your valuables in the vehicle. None of the nine cases mentioned involved any kind of break-in. All of the stolen items were either in plain view or in unsecured glove boxes or consoles. Put valuables in your trunk or a secured glove box or console.
