Rapid clinic available for same-day appointments

Tucked away on the 8th floor of Rutledge Tower is one of MUSC’s greatest assets for university and hospital employees, the Rapid Access Center (RAC). RAC was created for MUSC/UMA/MUHA employees and their adult family members to provide a fast, same-day, primary care appointment for acute-care needs.

This service is brought to employees through the University of Internal Medicine (UIM), under the Department of Medicine and the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. Patients receive care from a designated provider and nurse from the UIM faculty practice.

Same-day appointments are available for those experiencing symptoms such as flu, sinus infection, musculoskeletal pain (excluding chest pain), vaginal discharge, ear pain, joint pain, pink eye, cold, cough, rash, urinary tract infection, skin infection, sore throat and diarrhea. In the event that a patient calls with symptoms that RAC does not usually handle, the staff works to ensure the patient will be seen by the appropriate provider within UIM.

On an average day, RAC treats about 25 patients. About 80 percent of patients are employees. The remainder are adult family members of employees and current patients of UIM. All patients are encouraged to make an appointment so RAC can better provide rapid access and a quick turnaround time.

RAC complies with most insurance companies and offers the following co-payments: SHP Savings Plan: 20 percent, SHP Standard Plan: $15, and Preferred Blue (UMA): $20. BlueChoice Plan and CIGNA HMO are not covered unless referred by primary care physician.

RAC is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office is located on the Ashley Avenue side of Rutledge Tower, 8th floor. To schedule an appointment, call 876-0888.
