Nominations for faculty senate begins Aug. 18

by Paul Jacques, DHSc, and Gabie Ingraham, DMD

Faculty Senate Governance Committee
This coming year is shaping up to be of extraordinary importance for the MUSC faculty senate. In addition to regular senate work, the post tenure review process is being renegotiated.

Now is the time to think about who you wish to nominate as senators from your electoral unit for the 2010-2011 term; your best representative may be yourself.

Serving as senator or alternate provides an opportunity to help guide what happens at MUSC. It is also an excellent way for newer faculty to network and share in the governance of our university.

All faculty holding full-time primary academic appointments at MUSC with the rank of Instructor or above are eligible to serve as faculty senators and alternates. This includes faculty with modifiers—research or clinical. A tenure-track position is not required.

This year, positions are open for the following:

Unit                         Senate         Alternate

Dental Medicine            2                  2
Health Professions         3                  2
Medicine—
Basic Sciences*             3                  2
Medicine—
Clinical                          11                14
Nursing                           2                  2
Pharmacy                        2                  2
Library Science
& Informatics                   2                  2
* Basic Sciences includes the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology.

Nominations will be online from Aug. 18 through Sept. 1, and elections will be held Sept. 6 - 10.

Newly elected senators and alternates will be notified on Sept. 14 and take their seats on Oct. 11.

Duties of senators, alternates
Senators:  Faculty senators are asked to represent the views and interests of the faculty of their respective electoral units and the faculty-at-large. Senators are asked to serve on a standing committee of the senate to provide their ideas on the functioning of the senate and the governance of MUSC. Senators can also serve on standing committees of the university to represent the interests of the senate. Senators are expected to vote on issues brought before the senate by the various committees of the senate.

Alternate senators: Alternate senators are encouraged to attend all meetings of the faculty senate. Alternate senators are eligible to vote when attending in place of a senator who is unable to attend a meeting. Alternate senators are eligible and encouraged to serve as members of faculty senate committees.

For information, see http://www.musc.edu/facsen/ or contact your current senators (listed on the faculty senate site) for  information. Guidelines for senators/alternates are in the bylaws, also online.
