College of Medicine students making news
|
Rachel D. Maree,
a third-year medical student, was appointed as publications committee
co-chair of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Board of
Directors. This is Maree’s first term as a national board member and
she will be responsible for producing and managing editorial content of
the SNMA Journal. Maree also volunteers with the student-run CARES
(Community Aid, Relief, Education and Support) Clinic, a clinic
supporting the uninsured and underinsured in the Charleston area. Maree
graduated with a chemistry degree from Wake Forest University and a
Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Health Policy
and Administration from Yale School of Public Health in New Haven,
Conn.
Kenyatta
Frazier, a fourth-year medical student, was awarded the
Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship given by the American Medical
Association (AMA) Foundation. Each medical school was permitted to
submit one nominee. Frazier was among the 12 recipients
nationwide to receive the scholarship. It was created by the AMA to
ease medical students’ burdensome debt load, and is awarded based on
academic excellence and financial need. Kenyatta was nominated by
Deborah Deas, M.D., and Debra Hazen-Martin, Ph.D.
Valarian
Bruce, a fourth-year medical student, was awarded the
Audio Digest Scholarship given by American Medical Association and
supported by the Audio-Digest Foundation. Each medical school was
permitted to submit one nominee. Selection for this scholarship was
based on commitment to “communication of science,” which was defined as
activities such as mentoring or teaching. Bruce was nominated by
Deborah Deas, M.D., and Jennie Ariail, Ph.D.
