Rachel D. Maree, a third-year medical student, was appointed as publications committee co-chair of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Board of Directors. This is Maree’s first term as a national board member and she will be responsible for producing and managing editorial content of the SNMA Journal. Maree also volunteers with the student-run CARES (Community Aid, Relief, Education and Support) Clinic, a clinic supporting the uninsured and underinsured in the Charleston area. Maree graduated with a chemistry degree from Wake Forest University and a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Health Policy and Administration from Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn.

Kenyatta Frazier, a fourth-year medical student, was awarded the Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship given by the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation. Each medical school was permitted to submit one nominee.  Frazier was among the 12 recipients nationwide to receive the scholarship. It was created by the AMA to ease medical students’ burdensome debt load, and is awarded based on academic excellence and financial need. Kenyatta was nominated by Deborah Deas, M.D., and Debra Hazen-Martin, Ph.D.

Valarian Bruce, a fourth-year medical student, was awarded the Audio Digest Scholarship given by American Medical Association and supported by the Audio-Digest Foundation. Each medical school was permitted to submit one nominee. Selection for this scholarship was based on commitment to “communication of science,” which was defined as activities such as mentoring or teaching. Bruce was nominated by Deborah Deas, M.D., and Jennie Ariail, Ph.D.
