Children's emergency area receives design makeover

The nautical-themed design of MUSC’s Interim Children’s Emergency Department was ranked as one of the top five projects reviewed under the patient room category in the remodel/redesign competition by HEALTHCARE DESIGN Magazine.

The design, by Charleston’s Rosenblum Coe Architects and Atlanta’s Stanley Beaman & Sears, made it into the top five out of a total 80 submissions in this category. Cannon Design of Baltimore served as a contributing firm.

The project will appear in the December issue of the magazine. Online voting for Best in Category is held through Monday, Sept. 13.

The remodeling was done in response to overcrowding in the Emergency Department. It was decided that a new space, dedicated to pediatric patients, was needed.

The firm initially was hired to begin work on a new facility dedicated to children’s medical needs. However, demand was so great that a temporary facility was needed to serve the hospital since a new building would take several years for design and construction, she said.

Early on in the design, it became evident that signage and way-finding would be critical because the lobby does not connect directly to the clinical areas. The solution was to create an aquatic-themed environment incorporating clear way-finding graphics to connect the two spaces.
