DAISY Award for Nurses

The MUSC DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Nurses is a monthly award and is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).

All DAISY Award winners received an African Shona Tribe sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” a framed certificate, and a DAISY Award pin. The DAISY Foundation also delivered cinnamon rolls to all the nurses in each winner’s unit.

MUSC is among 400 medical facilities honoring nurses with The DAISY Award. This is one initiative of the foundation whose overall goal is to help fight diseases of the immune system.

April honoree
Bonnie Rab, R.N., RT 1 Children's Specialty Clinic
She was nominated by Johnna Jackson.
Last week, a distraught mother showed up the RT1 Children's Specialty Clinic with her son. Our registration staff recognized the urgency and called the nurses station. Bonnie Rab, R.N., took the call and went into action. Mom had been taking her son to an appointment but were late and were turned away. Mom was frantic and didn't know what to do. They had been seen previously at our Pediatric Neurology clinic so she came here. Bonnie discovered that the patient had been sending his mother text messages with suicidal themes. He has seizure disorder and was being called names at school. He was depressed, suicidal, and asking for help. Bonnie demonstrated such compassion and great customer service. She took them to the cafeteria and bought them lunch, then got the patient set up with a movie, while she talked with mom. She paged the MLP and gave her an update, got instructions to get them into the Peds ER, then called report and transportation. She took them under her wing and didn't stop until the family had been well taken care of. The frightened mother didn't feel so alone after being cared for so completely. Bonnie went the extra mile with her extraordinary kindness at a time of crisis in this patient's, and his mother's, life. She cared for this family as if they were her own. And, on this day, she really was "family" to them.”

Please submit  the story of the extraordinary care this nurse provided for you by email to chairna@musc.edu

Cinnabon is the official DAISY sponsor of the cinnamon rolls the DAISY team receives. As Charleston does not have a local Cinnabon, Ashley Bakery has agreed to donate cinnamon rolls to our MUSC DAISY team. Hill-Rom is the MUSC DAISY program sponsor.
