DAISY Award for Nurses

The MUSC DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Nurses is a monthly award and is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).

All DAISY Award winners received an African Shona Tribe sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” a framed certificate, and a DAISY Award pin. The DAISY Foundation also delivered cinnamon rolls to all the nurses in each winner’s unit.

MUSC is among 400 medical facilities honoring nurses with The DAISY Award. This is one initiative of the foundation whose overall goal is to help fight diseases of the immune system.

"Feb. 23 was a very busy night for the entire hospital. All adult beds were full with 4 patients being held in PACU and 10 patients in the Adult ED. We had a MET on 6E who became a Mayday requiring intubation. ICU beds were full and the patient needed to have ICU nursing care until a bed in MICU was available. Without hesitation Cameron Carone, Charge Nurse on STICU, eagerly agreed to float to PACU to care for that patient. He stayed with the patient until she were transferred to MICU. Then…..the Adult ED was holding 10 med/surg pts and needed an RN to stay with pts on the "C" side so they could evaluate and treat other pts. Cameron agreed to help out there and opened the "C" side to accommodate the extra pts. Not sure what we would have done without his help in this unusual situation. His kindness, compassion and dedication to always put the patient first was exemplified tonight. While doing all this he still continued to complete his responsibilities as the STICU charge RN. He is most deserving of this award."

Nominate a nurse

Nominate your nurse by telling MUSC the story how your nurse exemplify these qualities. If your nurse is selected, he/she will be honored  at a special celebration and will receive a certificate, award pin, and a hand-carved sculpture called A Healer's Touch.

Please submit  the story of the extraordinary care this nurse provided for you by email to chairna@musc.edu

Cinnabon is the official DAISY sponsor of the cinnamon rolls the DAISY team receives. As Charleston does not have a local Cinnabon, Ashley Bakery has agreed to donate cinnamon rolls to our MUSC DAISY team. Hill-Rom is the MUSC DAISY program sponsor.
