Dean named 2010 MLK award honoree

The Multicultural Student Advisory Board of MUSC selected Joseph T. DiPiro, executive dean of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy, the 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. honoree.

Every year, MUSC multicultural board joins other Charleston colleges (The Citadel, Charleston Southern University and Trident Technical College) in selecting an award recipient who the board feels has supported the University’s diversity goals and “demonstrates/exemplifies characteristics of Dr. Kings’ work.” Past MUSC recipients have included Thaddeus Bell, Sharon Jackson, Myra Haney, Jack Sanders, and Valerie West.

Joseph T. DiPiro, executive dean of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy
and Lisa Marie Murphy, a fourth-year student pharmacist on the MUSC campus of SCCP.

“I was delighted the board recognized what an outstanding job Dr. DiPiro has done in terms of encouraging and celebrating diversity at the college,” said Lisa Murphy, a second-year student pharmacist who served as pharmacy’s representative on Multicultural Student Advisory Board. “He has also worked hard to foster a sense of community within the College, from campus to campus and from campus to university.”

Some examples of DiPiro’s efforts in terms of diversity include:
  • forming and serving chair of the Diversity Committee for the South Carolina College of Pharmacy
  • incorporating diversity efforts into every part of the College’s operations, such that it was added to the SCCP Mission Statement last year
  • making a diverse, welcoming community a fundamental part of the College’s vision of being a top 10 school in quality. The charges for the Diversity Committee open with this statement: “Diversity of the SCCP Faculty, Staff, and student body is essential to developing a welcoming and inclusive environment and to our goal of becoming a top quality college of pharmacy.”
  • forming a recruiting committee that included as one of its charges a renewed emphasis on creating, enhancing, and sustaining relationships with advisors at historically black colleges so the SCCP could recruit more African-American students.
DiPiro and the recipients from other local colleges were acknowledged at an award presentation during the annual MLK Jr. program hosted by the Intercollegiate Consortium Feb. 5 at Trident Technical College.
