Dave Kreber was playing golf with business associates when he received the news.
"I got paged at the clubhouse and it said to call (my wife) Sally. She said, 'Dave, you're not going to believe this, but Monica has leukemia. I need you to come home immediately,'" he recalls, "I was standing there with a cell phone next to a tree, and I fell down on my knees and I said, 'She has what?'"
Monica was 7 years old then when her battle began. Curing Monica took three years of chemotherapy, hundreds of nights in the hospital and a dedicated team of MUSC physicians. Today, Monica attends Winthrop, is an aspiring journalist and most importantly, shares a message of hope to all who battle cancer.
For the past 15 years, The Monica Kreber Golf Tournament has raised more than $451,000 for cancer research in the Darby Children's Research Institute.
The golf tournament will begin at 1 p.m. July 22 at Wild Dunes Resort.
