Charleston Moves sponsors bike to work day events

 

National Bike to Work Day is an event celebrated across the United States each May to encourage and celebrate bicycling to work and to promote public awareness of bicycling and bicycle safety. Sponsored by The League of American Bicyclists, Bike to Work Day will be held May 18 as an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of bicycle commuting, including fitness, cutting fuel costs and reducing pollution.

Piggly Wiggly is sponsoring six Breakfast Aid Stations around the region. From 6:30 – 9 a.m. Bike to Work goodies will be free for bicyclists at the following local Piggly Wiggly stores:

MUSC Employee Wellness' Charleston Moves will host an aide station at the East Bay end of the Ravenel Bridge. At the end of the day, come celebrate the good work done by local bike/pedestrian advocates at the Work to Bike party from 6:30 – 10 p.m. at the Hippodrome, Liberty Square, downtown Charleston. The free, bike-friendly waterfront evening will feature live music by Satellite Rodeo, New Belgium Beer and a silent auction. Membership donations are encouraged. Employee Wellness events

· Chair massages: Free massages are offered to employees on Tuesday nights and midday Wednesdays. Look for broadcast messages for locations and times.

· MUSC's Pitch the Pack Program: Free smoking cessation program offered to MUSC employees and students. Classes, counseling and a one-month supply of medications are available to eligible participants. Receive a complementary "success kit" with enrollment that is filled with gifts. · MUSC Urban Farm: Work & Learn - Learn through working with the soil and seeds in the MUSC Urban Farm from noon - 1 p.m. May 23. Family workday is 9 – 11 a.m. May 19. Bring a plastic bag and take home some fresh produce for a harvest of kale, chard, totsoi and radishes. Please bring water, sunscreen and wear closed toe shoes. · Wellness Wednesday: National Alcohol Awareness Month. Stop by Children's Hospital lobby from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. May 23 and learn about the good and the bad health effects of alcohol use, what a standard serving of alcohol looks like, how to talk with your teenagers about alcohol consumption and how you or a loved one might benefit from participating in free and confidential research studies that are taking place at the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs. · Farmers market: Fresh fruits and vegetables are available from local farmers from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Friday in the Horseshoe and in the grassy area next to Ashley River Tower behind Charleston Memorial Hospital.
