Developing Scholars Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward junior faculty members who have made contributions to the research mission of MUSC, either with their individual research program or as part of an interdisciplinary research team, and to promote the continued development of these creative scholars. The award is aimed at individuals who have successfully demonstrated the capacity to compete for extramural funding but who are still in the formative stages of their career and demonstrate exceptional promise for the future. Candidates are restricted to faculty members holding the rank of Assistant Professor who have been on the MUSC faculty at least two, but no more than six, academic years. See below for a full description of this program.

Any member of the MUSC faculty may make nominations. The nominating package should include the full curriculum vitae of the nominee in standard MUSC format, letters from four scholars outside MUSC attesting to the research achievements of the nominee with two of the letters from individuals other than mentors, and a statement from the nominator (not to exceed 1000 words) outlining the candidate's background and potential for continued growth and development.

I. Policy Statement

A. Purpose
The purpose of the MUSC Foundation Developing Scholars Program is to recognize junior members of the MUSC faculty who are promising research scholars as demonstrated by their research contributions, and to promote the further development of these individuals as creative scholars.

B. Nature of Fellowship
No more than three MUSC Foundation Scholars are to be named each year. Scholars may be named in the basic or applied/clinical sciences category. Each fellow shall receive, along with a certificate, a monetary reward of $3,000 to be used at the discretion of the awardees. During the fellowship year, each fellow shall present an open seminar on the nature of her/his work.

C. Eligibility
The criteria for eligibility are as follows:
1. Appointment to the faculty of MUSC for at least two years with current rank of Assistant Professor.
2. Appointment at the level of Assistant Professor for no longer than six years regardless of University affiliation.

*Faculty members who have previously received this award are ineligible for re-nomination.

D. Selection Procedure
Nominations for the MUSC Foundation Developing Scholars are solicited from the faculty of MUSC by a call for applications from the associate provost for research. A review committee with members appointed by theassociate provost for research shall review applications and recommendations. This committee shall consist of faculty members universitywide and no less than two distinguished scholars from outside MUSC, plus an M.D./Ph.D. student or a Ph.D. student.

II. Selection Criteria

Nominations shall be evaluated on the basis of the scholarly achievements of the applicant and the potential for further development of her/his creative efforts.

Nominations may be made by any member of the MUSC faculty. The nomination packet should consist of: (1) the full curriculum vitae of the nominee in standard MUSC format; (2) letters from four scholars outside MUSC attesting to the research and scholarly achievements of the nominee with two of the letters from individuals other than mentors and; (3) a statement from the nominator (not to exceed 1000 words) outlining the candidate's potential for continued growth and development, the quality of the nominees' work, and how his/her research has impacted the state of knowledge of her/his particular research area. The nomination letter should indicate whether the scholar is being nominated in the basic or applied/clinical sciences category.

Deadline for nominations is Monday, May 28.
