The theme of this year's National Nutrition Month (NNM), which is celebrated in March, is "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day."
NNM started in 1973 as just a week in March. As the public's interest in nutrition started to increase, one week was transformed into a whole month dedicated to nutrition.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that the purpose of NNM is to "promote the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits."
Nutrition Month will kick off March 1 at the MUSC Urban Farm. Guests are invited from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to purchase a $5 boxed lunch, watch a cooking demonstration and listen to registered dietitians speak about how to "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day."
Throughout March, activities are planned for all ages including coloring activities at the Children's Hospital and interactive booths and presentations.
Wellness Wednesdays will be offered each week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. These events will be held at the Children's Hospital lobby on the first and third Wednesdays and the Ashley River Tower cafeteria lobby on the second and fourth Wednesdays.
Each Wellness Wednesday will include an interactive booth exploring ways to produce a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner. All booths will include examples of meals to consume as well as samples to try. Lunch and learn events will be held at the farm on the second, third and fourth Thursday beginning at 12:15 p.m.
