Charleston -- Carl David Geier Jr., M.D., MUSC orthopedic surgeon and director of MUSC Sports Medicine, has been named chief tournament physician for the 2007 Family Circle Cup professional tennis tournament.
The 2007 Family Circle Cup, which will take place April 7-15 on Daniel Island, is part of the Sony Ericsson WTA (Women's Tennis Association) Tour and is one of the longest running all-women's Tier I events in the world showcasing the best in women's tennis.
"Being named Chief Tournament Physician of the Family Circle Cup is quite an honor," Geier says. "I, along with the rest of the physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers of MUSC Sports Medicine, am excited to have the opportunity to provide world-class treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries to the best tennis players in the world."
Geier specializes in orthopaedic surgery with interests in pediatric, adolescent and adult sports medicine, athletic injuries and arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder and elbow. He received his medical degree from MUSC, completed his residency at the University of Tennessee's Campbell Clinic and his fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. Geier has assisted with and provided orthopaedic coverage for the St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Cardinals, the U.S. Women's Soccer Team, the Rhodes College football and basketball teams, the Memphis Marathon, the Kroger-St. Jude Tennis Championships, the Cellular South Cup and the U.S. Open Racquetball Championships.
Geier's responsibilities at this year's tournament will include providing emergency orthopaedic care to athletes, examining injuries and administering treatments, therapy, and medication to players. Geier hopes the presence of MUSC Sports Medicine at such a highly visible event will show Lowcountry residents, spectators around the world and athletes of all ages that state-of-the-art injury prevention, treatment, surgery and rehabilitation offered by MUSC Sports Medicine provides is not limited to elite competitors.
