MUSC Anesthesiologist Receives International Honor

CHARLESTON -- American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Immediate Past President and Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) professor Orin F. Guidry, M.D., was elected an honorary member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland (AAGBI) on September 14.

Honorary membership to AAGBI was instituted when it was founded in 1932. The award is accompanied by a citation and a certificate. Honorary membership has been granted in several categories, including:

  • Very eminent overseas anesthetists
  • British and Irish anesthetists who have held high office in the association, usually at or about the time of retirement from active practice
  • Eminent British and Irish anesthetists of great distinction who have not necessarily held high association office
  • Members of other medical disciplines who have contributed to the specialty of anesthesia
  • Members of other professions who have rendered signal service to the association
  • Guidry is currently the vice-chair for professional development in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at MUSC, and has served as ASA president, treasurer and as a member of the board of directors since 1996. He has served as chair of numerous committees and task forces.

    Currently the president of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), Guidry has served as director and treasurer of both the ABA and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research.

    A graduate of Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine, Guidry trained at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
