MUSC Dental Students Receive Prestigious Hinman Scholarships

ATLANTA - MUSC dental students Julian S. Dixon IV and Albert D. Olipant recently received scholarships from the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society. They were officially presented with the awards at the recent Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta.

The Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society has promoted education in the dental profession since 1912. The society grants scholarships to dental students, dental hygiene, laboratory technician, and dental assistant students. Recipients are selected by the dean of each school's dental department and must be junior student members of the American Dental Association as well as in the top 10 per cent of their class. Recipients are known as ìHinman Scholars.î

ìThe Hinman scholarship is very prestigious,î said Dr. John Sanders, Interim Dean, MUSC College of Dental Medicine. ìRecipients must have done well academically and clinically, demonstrated leadership qualities as well as high moral and ethical values. Both of these students exemplify the qualities and values set forth in the Hinman. I am very proud of them and expect great things from them in the future.î

Dixon and Olipant along with students from 37 southeastern colleges and universities, as well as dental education groups and clinics received awards at the meeting.
