CHARLESTON -- Jerry R. Powell, M.D., of Anderson has been appointed to the Medical University of South Carolina Board of Visitors. Members are nominated by the trustees of the university and serve as ambassadors in their respective regions.
Powell, a surgical consultant with AnMed Health Obesity Care, is a 1965 graduate of MUSC. Powell earned his undergraduate degree from The Citadel and is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight surgeon and staff surgeon.
Powell is a member of the American Medical Association, the South Carolina Medical Association, the South Carolina Surgical Society and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has served AnMed in several capacities including Chief of Hospital Medical Staff and Board of Trustees Chairman. He is also a past president of the South Carolina Medical Association's Foundation Board.
Powell was born in Dillon Court and currently lives in Anderson with his wife, Gill. The couple have three children, Rob, Bee, and Ned and four grandchildren. The Powells attend Grace Episcopal Church.
