Hollings Cancer Center Director to Chair Thoracic Surgery Board

CHARLESTON -- Carolyn Reed, M.D., director of MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center, has been elected chairman of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). She will serve first a two-year term as vice chair and then a two-year term as chair.

When Reed was appointed to the board in 1997, she was the first woman to serve in the board’s 50-year history.

Only the most highly qualified thoracic surgeons in the United States are selected to serve on the ABTS Board of Directors. The board’s primary purpose is to protect the public by establishing and maintaining high standards in thoracic surgery. To achieve these objectives, the Board has established qualifications for examination and procedures for certification and recertification. Its requirements are reviewed regularly and modified as necessary.
