Charleston, SC -- Two Charleston individuals have been named to the Board of
Trustees of the Medical University of South Carolina. They are William B. Hewitt,
a Charleston business executive, named as the governor’s at-large appointee,
and Paula E. Orr, M.D., a Charleston physician, as the governor’s designee.
They will attend their first board meeting on August 8. President of Sirius Ventures, Inc, a consulting firm, Hewitt is chairman of
the board of Polymer Group, Inc. and Global Vantedge International, two for-profit
corporations as well as Water Missions International, a not-for-profit corporation.
He has served on the university’s Health Sciences Foundation Board from
1990 to 2001, the last five years as chairman of the board and the prior three
years as vice chairman. At the May 2001 commencement he was honored with a Doctor
of Humane Letters from the Medical University. Hewitt serves as chairman of the board of the Spoleto Festival USA, chairs The
Citadel School of Business Administration Advisory Board and was president of
the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association. He received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University
of Connecticut and a baccalaureate engineering degrees from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate
School and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Orr is owner of the Charleston Women’s
Wellness Center in Charleston. She has been honored by placement on the Charleston
Regional Business Journal’s “Forty Under Forty” list, recognizing
individuals with the “heart and talent to make a positive difference in
our community.” She was also listed in Outstanding Young Women in America,
Who’s Who among Executives and Professionals and Who’s Who On American
Colleges and Universities. She is a member of the Susan G. Komen Charleston Affiliate Board, Delta Sigma
Theta Public Service Sorority and Jack & Jill of America. A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte with a bachelor’s
degree in biology, Orr received her M.D. degree from Wayne State University
School of Medicine in Detroit. She received her residency training and was chief
resident in the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Cook County Hospital
in Chicago. #####
