Orthopaedic Surgeon, Labor Attorney to Head MUSC Trustees

Charleston -- The Board of Trustees at the Medical University of South Carolina has elected Charles B. Thomas Jr., M.D., as chairman, and Thomas L. Stephenson, J.D., as vice-chairman.

Thomas, a Greenville native, has been a board member since 1996, having served as vice-chairman from 1998 to 2002. Elected as the medical professions representative from Congressional District 4 in 1996, Thomas practices orthopaedic surgery in Greenville. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1973 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology, he went on to obtain his Bachelor's of Science degree in Pharmacy from MUSC in 1978, and his medical degree from MUSC in 1984. Thomas is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In addition to his published and presented work, Thomas holds a U.S. patent for ìApparatus and Method for Implanting Distal Screws in Intramedullary Rod.î He and his wife, Tricia, have three children.

Stephenson, a Greenville attorney, has served on the board since 1998. A lay representative from Congressional District 4, Stephenson received both Bachelor's of Science and law degrees from the University of South Carolina. He specializes in various types of employment-related and commercial litigation as a partner with Nexsen Pruet Adams & Kleemeier, LLC. Stephenson is a certified specialist in employment and labor law. He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America in 2005 and 2006. He and his wife, Dianne, have two children.
